Yoga Etiquette

the integrity of the yoga practice
is about the individual journey each student is taking. We want to respect all who are coming into the studio and create a safe and consistent environment for their personal yoga practice. Be sure to read about the classes we offer on class offerings and refer to our online class schedule to find the right class time for you.

new students
New students, please arrive 15-20 minutes early to fill out your new client form and liability statement. We will also give you a copy of our spa and studio policies and etiquette form. To encourage a yoga practice at home and at the studio, we ask that you invest in a yoga mat, a large towel and water. Do not eat within two hours before class. Do hydrate well and wear light weight, not too tight, not too loose clothing. Classes begin promptly.

sign in
at the front desk before class and make any purchases before class, as desk may close during the evening hours.

quiet in the yoga room
the yoga room is sacred space...please enter with a peaceful mindset. You are welcome to converse with fellow yogis using a very calm voice, considering the peaceful space we want to create in the studio and spa. Reminder, to turn cell phones off during class time. It is fine to leave class for the bathroom: There is no need to ask the teacher's permission. The best time to go is when there is a period of rest, either in Child's pose or downward facing dog.

props
we work hard to provide and present a clean and orderly yoga studio. Do your part by consciously replacing the props and blankets you use just as you found them. Folding the blankets neatly as you took them.

personal belongings
should be stored on the shelves in the yoga room. Only mat, towel and water should be taken into the yoga room. Yoga Students should leave shoes at the landing before you walk up the stairs into the spa.

lost and found
Please take your belongings home each day. We do not have the space to keep mats, towels and water bottles. Call right away if you leave something and we will look for it and put it aside. We are not responsible for items left behind. Mats left longer than two weeks will be added to the rental mats.

intention
To help you focus, you might find it helpful to dedicate your practice to a certain intention. This might be to become more aware and understanding, more loving and compassionate, or healthier, stronger, and more skilful. Or it might be for the benefit of a friend, a cause—or even yourself.

compassion
get on your mat and center your thoughts before class begins. Late entry to a class is disruptive to the energy flow of the class. If you are late (and it us under 10 minutes), please stand at the door until your instructor signals you into the class. If you are more than 10 minutes late we would ask that you consider attending another class since you will have missed the warm up and sun salutations which are important to the practice and help warm the body and decrease injury. Students reserve time to practice and it may be a very important reserved time for every student.

mindfulness
place your mat consciously so others have room for practice.  Be considerate of other students and refrain from perfumes.

communication with the instructor
let your teacher know about injuries or conditions that might affect your practice. If you are injured or tired, skip poses you can't or shouldn't do, or try a modified version. Always keep your teacher informed of any changes and if you become pregnant. Always get your physician's approval before engaging in physical activity such as yoga.  Always let your teacher know if you are feeling painful discomfort in a pose - this is your responsibility.

honor
Remember to listen to your body. It is better to allow the body to open slowly than to push yourself too far, too quickly. Practice with safety in mind and careful listening to instruction in class. Listening to your own body: Although a teacher will lead you through poses with verbal guidance and hands on adjustments, listening closely to your own body is REQUIRED for a safe yoga experience. Come out of pose at anytime to rest.

respect
the teacher and your fellow students when you enter a yoga class. The beginning meditation and Savasana, ending meditation is a time when students must not enter the studio during or leave during this time of focus. “Lying upon one’s back on the ground at full length like a corpse is called Savasana. This removes fatigue caused by the other asanas and induces calmness of mind. Steady, smooth, fine and deep breathing without any jerky movements of the body soothes the nerves and calms the mind. The best antidote for stress is this practice .” If you cannot stay for at least 3 full minutes of savasana, we ask that you exit before so that others can enjoy this time quietly.

blissful fun
explore, learn and enjoy your time here. Leave your ego at the door since your mat has no space for ego (competetiveness, judgement, or pride).  Live in the moment on your mat and carry that intention when you walk off your mat. Live well, think well, and be well.
